Rhett's Birth Story-Part 2

So when I left off last, I was officially in labor. I was beginning to get a little scared because Addi's labor was a total of 8 hours. I always heard your second time is faster so I was anxious to see how far I was progressing each hour, and I wanted to get the epidural soon, but not too soon. I had tested positive for strep b, so none of the doctors or nurses were in a hurry to get Rhett out. Which was fine by me. We wanted the antibiotics to be in there before he came out. We waited until I was a 5 before I got the epidural and then after that the contractions kinda slowed down and became more irregular. I mentioned to the dr. that when they broke my water with Addi, things just happened super fast. They were a little apprehensive to do that though, because I still hadn't gotten the full course of antibiotics. They mentioned doing pitocin instead. I was kinda nervous about doing that because I had heard such awful stories about it, but I thought, hey what they heck I've got my epidural so it's not like I'll feel anything. WRONG-O. They put in the bag of pit and I went from a 5 to a 9 in an hour. During this time, my epidural decided to only work on my legs. So that was fun. NOT. Let me tell you, pitocin contractions are just wicked. My goodness. We timed one being 10 minutes long. Geez. I kept asking the anesthesiologist what the deal was and he would give me more dosing, but it only worked on my legs. I was beginning to get really scared. I told everyone going in to labor, and pretty much my whole pregnancy, I don't want to do this naturally. I want drugs. Lots of drugs. Welp....the doctor checked me again and at this point I was having trouble speaking because of the pain. Oh and there was probably 15 people in the room just hanging out. Which was actually great because it gave me somewhat of a distraction from the pain. I told the nurse I was feeling lots of pressure and she told me push down and when I did she told me to stop and she went and got the doctor. Apparently it was go time! This was the point where I was scared beyond belief. I looked at Josh and said, "I can't do this. I can feel everything." Super panicky and on the verge of spiraling into a full blown nervous breakdown. Haha! He just looked at me and basically said, pull it together it will be over before you know it. Ha! We were joking the other day about how if he should have said, "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." So the team of doctors came in and started setting up. I looked at the anesthesiologist one last time and asked him if there was anything he could do. ANYTHING. There was not. Also at this point, Josh had left the room to go direct his sister where to park. One of the dr's was like oh wow you weren't kidding when you said things would speed up when your water broke. Apparently, it had broken and Rhett was coming. In one of the more hilarious things, Jeanette RAN out of the room and went yelling down the hall for Josh to come back. Don't worry, he made it in time. When Josh came back in, I started pushing. On the first push, I think they said his head almost came out. Second and third push I think my body was shutting down from being awake for over 24 hours. I hadn't gotten any rest since I had woken up the previous day. I think I even might have blacked out or fallen asleep? At that point, Treece yelled out, "I don't know nuthing bout birthin babies Mizz Scarlett!" Which cracked me up. I refocused and started pushing again. I'll be honest, there were several moments of me screaming like a wild animal. I was a little embarrassed because there were so many people in the room, but it was almost involuntary. Rhett came out after 12 minutes of pushing and they placed that little angel on my chest and the pain went away and everything was just silent in my head while I looked at him. Just the most perfect miracle ever.

I was so excited for Addi to meet him. When Scott told her that mommy had baby Rhett, she asked, "is he not kicking her anymore?" Haha! She remembers him kicking me quite a bit. And then she ran to my room and said, "I want to see my baby brother!"

My recovery has been 10 times easier than with Addi's. Maybe that's because I felt more with him and so that's the difference? I'm not sure, but I haven't had to take any pain meds besides Tylenol and I've been able to do a lot more. So that's a plus side of my epidural not working I guess. Haha! I was really glad that there were so many people to be present for his birth. Just like Addi's! Rhett came out hungry and has kept up that appetite ever since. I prayed for a good eater and I definitely got one. He is such a content baby. The only times he cries are if he's hungry or if he's cold. He loves to be swaddled tight and doesn't like for his little feet to be bare. So funny because Addi was the exact opposite. The child loved to be just in a diaper. He's sleeping pretty well. The first few days he was waking up every hour to feed. That was pretty exhausting. Thankfully, we've had a lot of help the first week. Addi is doing fantastic with him. She is such a great big sister and I couldn't be more proud of her. She's so loving towards him and always wants to give him sugars. So sweet. She's been a good helper too! She will bring me diapers or wipes when I'm changing him. Sweet girl.

So that is the end of the birth story! Super long so thanks for reading all the way. :)

  1. Oooh girl. That sucks about your epidural! Pit contractions are sooo much worse. I had both with Cade and they really are like night and day (I think). I thought the recovery was so much better, too, this time around. Did you feel like the cramps were so much worse when nursing? Mine were terrible and they say it gets worse with each child. Makes me scared for the 3rd!!! Ha!
